The Great Western Jazz Company is a fully rehearsed, professionally
presented band, featuring six of the south-west’s most experienced jazz
musicians, playing the music they love - the popular music from the jazz
and swing era. In a review of the band’s latest CD, the prestigious
JUST JAZZ magazine said ‘the standard of playing is high.....a
nice mix of jazz styles played with skill by a fine group of musicians’.
Leading the band on trumpet and flugelhorn is
Bob McTeare,
who also provides the vocals. Bob formerly played with the
St.Ives based ‘ Jazz Foundation’, and has played alongside many of the
great names in jazz. On clarinet and saxes is
John Lancaster, long-time member
of Cornwall’s well known New Jubilee Jazz Band, and leader of his own
quartet. Paul Hawkins,
on trombone, was with Bristol’s famous Blue Note Jazz Band for many
years, and more recently with the Penzance based group ‘Funny Feathers‘.
The rhythm section comprises John Chapman
on electric bass and Bobby
Stephens on drums, both
former ‘Jazz Foundation’ stalwarts, plus
Dan Roach - one of the west country’s finest solo and
rhythm guitarists -
together making one of the most sure footed units around. For larger
events, top pianist Roger Barnes
joins the band.
